Hello ! I’m Amrita, an award-winning, Indian-born filmmaker and photographer.

I started shooting analog photography at eight years old after begging my mother to buy me a $5 camera at a garage sale. Owning a camera at a young age instilled in me a lifelong fascination with capturing images, the visual arts, and non-verbal self-expression. This passion for photography combined with my love of writing propelled me to study film, which seemed like the logical intersection of these two interests. I received my BS in Film & Television Production from Boston University, then went on to intern at various production companies in London. After receiving my MFA from the International Film School of Paris, I was selected for the Reykjaví­k Talent Lab, where my thesis film was nominated for the Golden Egg prize. My debut feature film, WE WERE ÍSLANDS (2017), received numerous awards and nominations from Montana International Film Festival, Portland Film Festival, and the San Diego Film Awards, among others. It was my first film as writer, director, producer, lead actress, and editor. Additionally, my films have screened in competition at Reykjaví­k International Film Festival, Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, and Middlebury New Filmmakers Film Festival to name a few. 

I’m an advocate for diversity and inclusion in film and tv, and I ensure that women and people of color feature prominently in my casts and crews. My stories often explore the themes of alienation, loneliness, and disconnectedness through a lens that feels both personal and universal. My body of work includes narrative feature, narrative shorts, web series, fashion films, lifestyle videos, music videos, and promos. I am currently developing my second narrative feature film, a documentary feature, an original comedy-drama series, and a short film.
